| As the church is called upon to meet the unique needs of the emerging post-modern culture, the pressure to create bottom line results has led many ministries to sacrifice the centrality of biblical preaching on the altar of human pragmatism. Many churches today have traded the pulpit for a stage--a venue for church-growth techniques and vaudeville-like pageantries. The result is a malnourished community starved for truth. Spiritual famine has hit the land. Steve Lawson calls God's people back to a passionate commitment to proclaim the Word of God. The peril is too great to ignore. | Relationship struggles are not new. Adam and Eve, Samson and Delilah, David and Bathsheba, Hosea and Gomer, Joseph and Mary--all knew how hard relationships can be. Fortunately for us, we have a biblical record of their rewards and mistakes. Authors Doug and BJ Jensen have spent over 13 years ministering to married couples, and here take a closer look at 12 prominent couples from Scripture--their sins, their passions, and their pain--and offer relationship insights that transcend time. |

| Just as the Bible uses the stories of the Patriarchs, Judges, Prophets, and Kings to teach us, so we hope that our history units on Israel, Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation will be useful in teaching your children about the traits God desires. The Greenleaf Guides and the companion titles in the Famous Men series emphasize biography, so that you can focus on issues of character and the consequences, both temporal and eternal, of the choices which historical figures made so that we--and our children-- can learn to make wise choices in our lives. The stories can be read aloud to younger students, or read independently by older students, either as the focus of their study or as a supplement. Instructors will find them useful with students from second grade through junior high. |

| History is abut people. So it is important to begin the study of any historical period with a background in biography. As much as certain modern scholars like to crow about the debunking of the "great man" theory of history, it remains true that certain men (and their ideas) have had more impact and far-reaching influence than others. One needs to understand the important people in order to understand the times. And then one must achieve a deeper understanding of the times in order to understand the important people. The biographies in this volume show the continuity between the Renaissance and the Reformation. The revival of learning which characterized the Renaissance led directly to the recovery of the tools and texts that the Reformers used to plave the Bible in language (and hands) of the people. It is and old saw, but true, that "Erasmus laid the egg that Luther hatched." This book will give readers a sense of the events that helped to shape the modern world, the modern politcal state, and the church. You will meet men and women of tremendous ability and often unbelievable courage who were at work in the events of the Renaissance and Reformation. We should admire them for their virtues and seek to imitate them, and take caution from their flaws and failures and seek to avoid them. That, after all, is the point of studying history. |
