| An analysis of Chronicles using historical awareness, literary appreciation, and a biblical-perspective Now that the medium of "story" has been recovered by our postmodern culture, the books of Chronicles should find a renewed place in the Christian church, since they tell the story of the Davidic kingship in ancient Israel. David9s story is told as a theology of hope for a despairing Hebrew community in post-exilic Judah. Yet the books of Chronicles are also a sermon with an explicit application. The writer expected his audience to tease out the implications and applications of his retelling of Hebrew history on the basis of their knowledge of history and theology. | Few people would list 1,2 Chronicles as their favorite books of the Bible. Winfried Corduan's commentary will change some minds. Corduan has done a superb job of both interpreting and applying these important books. 1 Chronicles begins with nine chapters of genealogies. Most teachers and preachers would be tempted to skip over these chapters and begin with "the good stuff" in Chapter Ten. They won't do that after reading Corduan's commentary. Corduan makes these genealogies live. He helps the reader see why these apparently dry-as-dust section are a vital part of the Word of God. Corduan has had a long-standing love affair with these books that will come through from the introduction and run through the conclusion of the last chapter in 2 Chronicles. |
