| This selection of sermons was first published five years after M'Cheyne's death. They were compiled from the notes taken down by hearers but "without the least view to publica- tion" One advantage of this is that they bring before us the extemporaneous pleadings with sinners in which few so greatly excelled as did R. M. M'Cheyne. These sermons are stamped with eternity; they are the expression of one upon whose heart the weight of perishing sinners pressed and who earn estly longed for their conversion. Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-1843), the pastor of St. Peter's Dundee, died in his thirtieth year and in the seventh of his ministry. His epitaph describes him as a man who "was honoured by his Lord to draw many wanderers out of darkness into the pat hof life." Dr. Baxter of Blairgowrie wrote of M'Cheyne: "The chief thing about him was the unction from the Holy One...at times he was awakening...at other times he was melting and moving as he dwelt on the great theme of redeem ing love."
