This is a stimulating intellectual and spiritual autobiography of Otto Bird, a pioneer in the Great Books Movement in this country. It tells of his involvement with the exciting and influential reforms of Adler and Hutchins at the University of Chicago, his training as mediaevalist under the renowned Etienne Gilson at the Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto, and his founding of the Great Books Program at the University of Notre Dame. Then, in describing a personal philosophical search, Bird shows how, by pursuing the methods introduced by Gilson and Adler, he was able to make sense out of the confusion of philosophers and provides an example in an analysis of the controversy concerning the idea of justice. The center that he sought was found in the philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas and in the Roman Catholic church to which he became a convert. Bird's story provides unique insights into the development of the Great Books Movement and its influence upon American college education, to which a large part of his life was devoted by way of teaching, and writing through association from the beginning with the set Great Books of the Western World , published by Encyclopaedia Britannica. "Dr. Bird's search has wonderfully fulfilled the commandment to 'love thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.' He has interpreted this as directing him to a life of learning, and the result is an intellectual odyssey that is as instructive of ideas well-explored as it is convincing in its example of faith maintained." " John Van Doren , Editor, The Great Ideas Today "The journey of an intellect, of a soul, that puts before the reader a vision of the intellectual life one wishes were more palpably present in Catholic colleges and universities than it is nowadays." " Ralph McInerny , University of Notre Dame "A moving account of Bird's pursuit of the truth in diverse directions, and of his success in getting his efforts focused by his gift of faith. It is an exemplary tale of learning and of self-development." " Mortimer Adler , Director, Institute for Philosophical Research

One of the greatest preachers of the 20th century explores lessons that can be learned from the Psalms. There are many great messages in the Psalms. Each is written by a man of God, opening his heart before the Lord. The palmist were real people who experienced real struggles and found comfort and joy in the Lord, whom they were eager to praise. Their words offer us strategies for living the Christian life.In Seeking the Face of God, Martyn Lloyd-Jones teaches that rather than simply reading the Psalms and feeling emotionally stirred by the beautiful language, we should meditate on the messages the psalmists with to share with us. Lloyd-Jones gives practical advice on how to apply these messages to our lives.

The true story of a young immigrant priest, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos [1819-1867], the Redemptorist missionary who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000. Father Seelos possessed great mystical gifts due to his intense prayer life. His dedication to ministry with cheerful holiness makes him still an outstanding model for clergy, religious and laity alike. As an itinerant preacher and lifelong friend of the poor and destitute, Seelos was a spiritual Father to tens of thousands. Despite his early death at age 48, so profound was his missionary zeal that sickness, persecution, and even the upheaval caused by the Civil War, could not stop him.
