Corinth was not only one of the most flourishing commercial centers of the ancient world, but also a symbol of vile debauchery. "In this hotbed of vice," writes William Barclay, "some of the greatest work of Paul was done." The apostle wrote to the church there, partly to bolster its resistance of sin and corruption, but equally to chide and give counsel about the contentions that were tearing it apart. In his endearing, simple, and illustrative manner, Barclay shows how the message that Paul communicated to the Corinthians continues to help us who live today in the midst of twenty-first century temptations.

Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians to refute a belief that restricted God's grace to those alone who followed Jewish ritualistic law. Instead, Paul proclaimed that grace is offered freely to all, Gentile and Jew alike. A distinction of the letter to the Ephesians is that it was probably a circular letter and not addressed to a specific individual church. Also in this epistle, Paul was more meditative and poetic in his style as he wrestled with problems of good and evil to present that unity will be achieved ultimately when all things are gathered together in Christ.

Four things stand out in Paul's letters to the Thessalonians: Paul's deep, personal love for his readers; his concern that they stand for the truth about God and his Son Jesus; his insistence that this right doctrine make a practical difference in their lives; and his instruction about Jesus' coming again from heaven so they will not be misled by false teachers. Perhaps these Letters to the Thessalonians have your name and address on them as well. 8 studies for individuals or groups.
