John Owen (1616-1683) was one of the defining theologians in the Christian era. His books have been continually in print and are still influential today.Educated at Queen's College, Oxford, he was a moderate Presbyterian who became a Congregationalist after reading a book by John Cotton. He later helped draw up the Savoy Declaration, the Congregational Basis of Faith.During the English Civil War Owen was wholly on the side of the Parliamentarians, accompanying Cromwell on expeditions to Scotland and Ireland as Chaplain. Owen was influential in national life and was made Vice-Chancellor of Christ Church Oxford. After the Restoration of the Monarchy he was ejected from this position and devoted his energies to developing 'godly and learned men', in writing commentaries and devotional books, and in defending nonconformists from state persecutionAndrew Thomson uses various sources for this biography including Owen's adversaries 'who could not be silent on so great a name or withhold reluctant praise.'

He cried out from the rooftops of the world, “Do not be afraid: Open wide the doors to Christ.. This dynamic animated biography of Pope John Paul II traces the life of the pontiff from his childhood to his election as Pope. The whole family will enjoy seeing the experiences which fashioned this shy and brilliant intellectual into one of the greatest popes in history.
This collection of essays on the writings of John Paul II demonstrates his recogniton of the contemporary relevance of the work of St. Thomas Aquinas. This should not surprise because Aquinas's theology possesses an extraordinary appreciation of biblical revelation and the patristic witness, as well as keen metaphysical penetration. In John Paul II's creative mind, the key insights of Aquinas are extended and developed.
Gives highlights of 25 years of meetings in Rome of the Pope with youth from all over the world. It captures John Paul II's great sense of humor, his affection for young people, and his ability to understand and relate to today's youth. The Pope laughs and jokes, but he also challenges these young faithful to live up to the full demands of the Gospel. Very moving film!
This book reveals how through a discourse of truth-telling"calling things by their proper name"Pope John Paul II effectively exposed the corruption of language and thought fueling a death culture that is becoming increasingly embedded in medicine, human experimentation, commerce, law, and ideology. This is an indispensable guide to Pope John Paul's profound and practical insights, meditations, principles, and actions to protect society's most defenseless individuals. ''“William Brennan rebuts the charge that John Paul II's phrase “culture of death is no more than the exaggerated scolding of an anxious aging Churchman. In his latest work Brennan catalogues the conceptual and language games used in law, medicine, and politics to deny the humanity of the weak and the vulnerable. Quoting from our cultural elites, Brennan contrasts their cold concepts with John Paul II's warm affirmation of the value of every human life all the while showing how their vocabulary undercuts the sanctity of human life. ''The work is also an excellent resource for anyone who wants at his fingertips a handbook of the most egregious anti-life statements by the most prestigious of our cultural leaders. It is well researched and documented, a valuable resource for anyone engaged in our battle for a culture of life. ' "Adrian Reimers , Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame ''“We live not only in a time and place but also in the description of that time and place. William Brennan exposes how that description was twisted and deformed, and how John Paul the Great responded by teaching the world the language of the *culture of life.' '' "Rev. Richard John Neuhaus , Editor in Chief, First Things '''"No one has more astutely analyzed the language of death in our time than William Brennan, and his study of John Paul II's writings on the subject brings to our attention an aspect of the pope's thought that has often been overlooked."'' "James Hitchcock , Professor of History, St. Louis University ''“A veritable linguistic compass to ferret out the lies of the culture of death.'' "Fr. Basil Cole, OP, Professor of Moral Theology, Dominican House of Studies, Washington DC ''' William Brennan is a professor in the St. Louis University School of Social Service where he teaches courses in human behavior and the social environment, and family interaction under stress. He is author of Dehumanizing the Vulnerable: When Word Games Take Lives and has addressed major life issues at national conferences, on university campuses, and in the media. '
A distinguished list of Catholic writers present their unique insights on the extraordinary achievements of the 25 years of Pope John Paul II's pontificate. This prestigious group of writers make a strong case that this has not been merely an exceptional pontificate but one of the few epoch-making pontificates in Christian history. ' This book establishes clearly that Pope John Paul II is not only an historical figure whose actions and personal qualities have effected one of the great turning points in human affairs, but he is also one of those rare beings who possesses the vision and intensity of focus that compel the authors to say not only that he is an exceptional pope, but something much more: that here, truly, is Joannes Paulus Magnus: John Paul the Great.' Far from being a reactionary, this has been a pope of startling originality and intellectual range, who has both led and inaugurated change as well as defended the tradition of the church. Besides his originality and his personal charisma, John Paul II has been a leader with great courage. "Be not afraid" were his first words in his inaugural sermon as pope, and that has been the watchword for his papacy. In both his younger, incredibly energetic years, or his older, more frail and suffering years, his personal courage shines out. A leader with an indomitable spirit, John Paul II has been a great warrior who has inspired in others the virtues of courage, faith, and perseverance.
