In The Grip Of His Mercy

Bishop Donald Hilliard understands that we are under a great deal of pressure--financial pressure, family pressure, societal pressure as communities break down and the world becomes more dangerous. Even in the church community we are under pressure to live up to the expectations of others. Bishop Hilliard knows that the Christian life is one of occasional stumbles and temptations, and that many choose a questionable road to acceptance and success. His simple yet powerful message is this: God has not changed; the road to the moral life has always been filled with traps and treachery; if we build our lives on the strength of faith we will no fall and cannot fail. In eleven powerful and eloquent chapters, each on a different type of pressure, Bishop Hilliard shows how biblical figures such as David and Isaiah cracked under pressure--family pressure, leadership pressure, personal envy--but how their faith in the Lord always led them back to the right path. He then shows how these same pressures apply today, and how we can use the strength of the Lord to live in the glory of his mercy. This book captures the fiery eloquence that has attracted so many people to Bishop Hilliard, as well as the inspiring message that raises those congregants to their feet. This is a passionate book that not only lifts the spirit, but heals the soul.

The good, the true and the beautiful"it is for these that our souls long. Though they reside in unity and perfection in God alone, the written word is one place we can discover glimmers of divine light.' The writings of great souls can turn our gaze toward God as he is revealed in Jesus Christ. Even authors who do not know Christ or who reject Christ can still point to him, for anyone who seeks the truth finds it; and any one who turns his back on the truth turns away from a someone whose presence can often be more keenly felt in his absence. ' In this volume, Lucy Beckett illuminates some of the finest writings in the Western tradition and trains our eye to discover in them the Christian vision of God. She masterfully guides us through Sophocles, Plato, Augustine, Dante, Shakespeare, Dostoyevsky and many others, deftly demonstrating each author's worth as a bearer of truth. '"I greatly recommend In the Light of Christ . Rarely does a book so successfully transcend academic disciplines making the work of over three dozen thinkers from ancient to modern times accessible to the general reader. With lucid descriptions of the historical background and clear expositions of the often challenging works, Lucy Beckett shows how goodness, beauty and truth combine when the Grace of God acts upon the human mind." Even though Gretchen's sound has been described as a cross between The Benjamin Gate, Evanescence and a heavier edged No Doubt, they have forged a sound all their own, balancing catchy hooks and melodies with heavy guitar tones that give the music teeth without losing it's radio friendly edge. Gretchen is at home playing with heavy weights like P.O.D. or Chevelle, but retain the ability to gel with more contemporary styled groups

Brendle, associate pastor at an evangelical megachurch in Colorado Springs, Colo., aims his first book at 20- and 30-somethings who are in limbo: they may be called by God to be pastors, or gardeners, or parents, but they need more time to mature before taking the next step. Brendle's book is about living faithfully in the time between the call and its fulfillment. Too often, he says, we are tempted to "manhandle" God's plans for us or forget about our call because it seems to take too long to play out. Brendle urges us instead to follow the lead of the biblical David, who was anointed by Samuel, but then had to wait on the Lord until his calling was fulfilled. The life stage to which Brendle draws our attention is important, but the book is flawed. Many readers may not have experienced the same kind of clear call that Brendle presupposes and experienced himself in his career and marriage decisions. Brendle may also one day regret lines like "Okay, wow. That was heavy. I need to take a deep breath now because I'm fired up and the veins in my neck are bulging a bit." Perhaps he could have followed his own advice and let this book coalesce a little longer. (Dec.) Copyright (C) Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
